Coolum Cricket Club Update & AGM Notice

Morning all.

I know junior football season is only just starting, but I thought I’d send out a Coolum Cricket Club update.

2019/20 was a great season for the club. Unfortunately, Covid-19 brought the season to a premature end and we never had a Club Presentation Day and the SCCA Senior Grand Finals were cancelled.

The 2020/21 SCCA senior cricket season is scheduled to start on time in early October. Training will start in mid-August. The junior season will start a little later than usual to allow the footy codes to complete their season. Junior matches will commence on Saturday 24 October with training starting in early October.

Sign on again this season  will be an online process. Our club secretary, Chris Lahood is getting the registration portal set up at the moment. Instead of a sign on day, we will have a season launch in September. This will double as a presentation of awards and trophies for the 2019/20 season. We’ll confirm the details via email in the next week or so.

A few highlights of the 2019/20 junior cricket season –

  • Rory Cowling, Adam Kerr & Jack Simpson all represented the Sunshine Coast at the Queensland Schoolboys Carnival in March 2020. Rory captained the side and was subsequently selected in the Queensland Schoolboys side;
  • Two of the best junior cricketers our club has ever produced went on to represent the Scorchers in senior cricket in 2019/20. Lleyton Chick played for the Scorchers all season in the Qld Premier Cricket competition, highlighted by a 5/32 bowling performance in 1st Grade against Redlands in January. Maddie Duncan represented the Scorchers in the Jodie Fields Shield and took 2 wickets in the winning Grand Final side in March.
  • Five of our junior cricketers were rewarded with selection in junior rep sides. Ben Gordon starred for the U12 Sunshine Coast side on their way to the QJC State Title. Will Bristow played for the Sunshine Coast in the U13 Les Kinnane side and Ben Blackwell, Hudson Going & Harrison Single all represented the Coast in the U12 Ian Healy side.
  • Felix Henderson won the U14 bowling award for the SCCA with 17 wickets at an average of 13.35.

The Coolum CC had a momentous season of senior cricket. For the first time, the club were represented in the SCCA 1st Grade Competition. Thanks in particular to our senior coach Sam Curtis & inaugural 1st grade skipper, Tim Hynes. This was a big step for our club and the players should be proud of their efforts in season 2019/20. This was a huge step in the right direction for the future of Coolum Cricket Club.

We were also represented in 2019/20 by our first ever Women’s side. Not only did the ladies hold their own in season 1, they went on to make the Grand Final in March, losing narrowly to Yandina. Thanks so much in particular to Kerry Cowling & Maree Chown for all of their efforts. Without their involvement, the season wouldn’t have got off the ground.

Thanks also to our Committee for everything they have done. The club can’t exist without these people. Paul McNamara, Kerry Cowling, Jeff Going, Chris Lahood & Maree Chown were brilliant all year.

Two of our life members have recently stepped down from long term club roles. Doug “DC” Campbell as our Grants Officer and Andrew “Heff” Hefferan as our Senior Match Committee delegate are legends of Coolum Cricket Club. We are all so appreciative of everything that both DC and Heff have done for the club. Don’t be strangers fellas.

A big thank you again, like every cricket season, to Rod “Rocket” Chambers & Neil “Goz” Gorrie. Maintaining our main oval, preparing pitches and keeping water up to an oval with limited irrigation is a huge job and Rocket & Goz have again been outstanding. All of our members thank you guys.

Thanks also to all of our sponsors and local school communities for the continued support.

Lastly, the club AGM will be on Sunday 9th August at 9:30am at the Ron Cargill Oval clubhouse, Coolum Beach. Love to see you there if you can make it.

Thanks,

Marty
